Plan Examiner

Prerequisite   Certified Fire Inspector II or training/experience.

A completed application and test fee is required two weeks before the test can be taken.  Proof of prior certification as a Fire Inspector II is also required before a candidate is eligible to take plan examiner.  In lieu of Inspector II candidates shall attest to having training/experience reviewing and approving plans specific to fire protection systems, means of egress, are or review of architectural drawings. The candidate must have the knowledge as outlined in NFPA 1031, 2009. Edition, Standard for Professional Qualifications for Fire Inspector II.

NOTE: This is considered an advanced level certification in which passage of the skill portion is greater for candidates who have had training and experience in conducing plan reviews. This examintion is NOT for entry level individuals.

The skills tested are designed to test the candidate on the knowledge and proficiencies as outlined in NFPA 1031 for Plan Examiner I.  All skills have been referenced to a specific standard in NFPA 1031.

Bibliography

The textbooks listed below were used in developing the skill stations for the Fire Inspector I exam.  The candidate should have knowledge of the information contained in these books:
  1.  IFSTA, Fire Inspection and Code Enforcement, 6th Edition           
  2.  Delmar, Fire Prevention, Inspection, and Code Enforcement, 2nd Edition  
  3.  NFPA 1031 Fire Inspector Professional Qualifications, 2009        

Test
To qualify for Plan Examiner, the candidate will submit a portfolio of completed skills for evaluation.  The skills examination must be completed within 60 days of the application date and forwarded by the certification candidate to the address provided. Upon receipt, an evaluator shall be assigned to review the skills.  Evaluator shall subsequently schedule session with the candidate who shall be required to defend and justify submitted skills and documents  Skill stations for the portfolio are available from the Executive Director.

Re-certification

  • Every three years.
  • Requires 24 hours of Plan/Alarm/Sprinkler Review training and/or experience for each of the three years.
  • Re-certification Cost:  $20.00
