NFPA 472 - Haz Mat Technician

Prerequisite - Certified at Hazardous Materials Awareness and Operations levels - both required for Fire Fighter I and II

  • A completed application and proof of prior certification as a Firefighter I and II or Hazardous Materials Awareness and Operations level certification is required before a candidate is eligible to take a Hazard Materials Technician exam.
  • The candidate must have the knowledge and skills as outlined in NFPA 472. This knowledge can be obtained from a variety of sources and many courses are readily available.

Standard - NFPA 472
The questions and skills tested are designed to test the candidate on the knowledge and proficiencies as outlined in NFPA 472, Professional Competence of Responders to Hazardous Material Incidents. All questions have been referenced to a specific standard in NFPA 472.

Test

  • The test is in two parts, a written test and a practical exam.
  • The written test is made up of 100 multiple-choice questions selected at random from a test bank of 376 questions. A score of 70 percent (adjusted by standard measurement of error) correct answers must be achieved in order to achieve a passing score.
  • Practical exam will consist of four to six stations where the candidate must demonstrate proficiencies in that area. The stations will be selected from the proficiencies required in NFPA 472.
  • Test Cost: $80
  • Candidate must supply OSHA approved Protective Equipment.

Re-certification

  • Every three years.
  • Requires 24 hours of Hazardous Material Technicain level training for each of the three years.
