Firefighter II
NFPA 1001, 2008 Edition
NOTE: If you hold a 2002 Edition of Firefighter I and wish to be certified to Firefighter II you are required to take the NFPA 1001 Haz Mat Operations. This inlcudes a 50 question test and at least one practical skill station.
A complete application and proof of prior certification as a Firefighter I is required before a candidate is eligible to take a Firefighter II exam.
The candidate must be knowledgeable and able to meet the criteria outlined in NFPA 1001 for Firefighter II. There are many ways to obtain this knowledge such as technical college program, individual fire department training, home study, etc.
NFPA 1001 Firefighter II 2008 Edition
The questions and skills tested are designed to test the candidate on the knowledge and proficiencies outlined in NFPA 1001 for Firefighter II. This will also include the referenced prerequisite listed in NFPA 1001, such as Hazard Materials Operations level training.

- The test is two parts, a written test and a practical exam.
- The written test is made up of 100 multiple-choice questions selected at random from a test bank of over 400 questions. A score of 70 percent (adjusted by standard measurement of error) correct answers must be achieved in order to achieve a passing score.
- The practical exam will consist of at least four stations where the candidate must demonstrate proficiencies in that area. The stations will be selected from proficiencies required in NFPA 1001 Firefighter II requirements.
- Test Cost: $70
- Candidate must supply OSHA approved Protective Equipment and SCBA.
- Every three years
- Requires 24 hours of Firefighter II training for each of the three years
- Re-certification cost is $20
