Firefighter I

NFPA 1001, 2008 Edition

We are no longer testing to the 2002 Edition of NFPA 1001 Firefighter I standard.

Candidates who need to retest to the old FFI standard have until October 31, 2009 to complete the retest.

 

Prerequisite
A completed application and test fee is required before taking FFI Certification test. The candidate is expected to be knowledgeable and able to meet the criteria outlined in NFPA 1001 and applicable portions of the NFPA 472 for Firefighter I. There are several ways to obtain the knowledge and skills necessary to pass the exam, such as a technical college program, an individual fire department training, home study, etc. No prior certification is required.

Standard

NFPA 1001 Firefighter I 2008 Edition & NFPA 472 Standard of Professional Competence of Responders to Hazardous Materials Incidents, 2008 Edition - Sections 5.1 through 5.5
The questions and skills tested are designed to test the candidate on the knowledge and proficiencies outlined in NFPA 1001 for Firefighter 1. All questions in the test bank have been referenced to the standards noted above.

Test

  • The test is two parts, a written test and a practical exam.
  • The written test is made up of 150 multiple-choice questions selected at random from a test bank of over1700 questions. The last 50 questions are Haz-Mat Operatins level questions and are graded separately. A score of 70 percent (adjusted by standard measurement of error) correct answers must be achieved in both Fire Fighter and Haz-Mat Awareness portions in order to achieve a passing score
  • The practical exam consists of the candidate demonstrating proficiency in four to six categories selected at random from the proficiencies required in the NFPA 1001 standards.
  • Test Costs: $70

Re-certification

  • Every three years.
  • Requires 24 hours of Firefighter I training for each of the three years.
  • Re-certification cost is $20.
